How to Jump-Start a Car

Jump Start a Car

When your vehicle won’t start in Columbia, the first thing you should do is get a jump-start. A dead battery is the most common reason why a car won’t start. It’s an easy fix—you just need to jump start the car battery. Learn how to properly jump start a car with the service team at Sharp Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM.

The Proper Way to Jump-Start a Car

When you’re getting ready to properly jump start a car, you’re going to need a set of jumper cables and a working vehicle. A friend or a good Samaritan can help, or you can contact an auto service like AAA. If your vehicle has roadside assistance, they can help you, too.

  1. Park the car with the good battery facing the one with the dead battery. Make sure that the vehicles are turned off and the parking brakes are engaged.
  2. Open both hoods and find the batteries. If necessary, remove a plastic hood to expose the battery terminals. Identify the positive and negative terminals and make sure they’re clean and free of any corrosion.
  3. Connect the red clamp to the positive post on the dead battery, then uncoil the battery cable, hook the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the battery with the charge.
  4. Connect the black clamp to the negative post on the good battery. Connect the final clamp to an unpainted metal surface on your car’s frame.
  5. Once everything is hooked up, start the engine of the vehicle with the good battery first, and then, the one with the dead battery.
  6. Once the dead vehicle has been jump-started, remove the jumper cables in the reverse order that they were placed on. Turn off the car that was used to help jump start the dead car.
  7. Keep the engine running on the restarted vehicle for at least 10 minutes to generate the charge.

What if My Car Won’t Jump Start?

If your car doesn’t jump start, that means there’s something else going on, and you’re going to need professional assistance near Lawerenceburg. Here are some of the reasons why your car won’t jump start:

  1. If you only hear a clicking sound when you try to start your car, the starter might not be functioning. Schedule service at Sharp Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM near Lewisburg for a replacement.
  2. If the electrical systems of the car turns on, but the engine fails to turn over, the problem could be the ignition switch, battery, starter, or a fuse. It’s worth towing your vehicle to a service center, so they can diagnose the issue.
  3. Again, it’s imperative to keep your vehicle running for a while after getting the jump start, so the battery can fully recharge.
